SS416 Round Bars is a free machining stainless steel with a machinability of 85%, highest of all stainless steels. With most of the free-machining stainless steels, the machinability can be improved by adding sulphur, which leads to the formation of manganese sulphide inclusions. Addition of sulphur also reduces the formability, weldability and corrosion resistance of 416 steels to below that of grade SS410. Because of their high machinability and low cost, grade 416 steels are available in highly tempered, hardened or unhardened forms.

Martensitic steels with high hardness are manufactured using methods that require final hardening and tempering treatments. The corrosion resistance of these steels is lower than that of austenitic steels. Decrease in the ductility of martensitic steels at sub-zero temperatures, and strength at high temperatures due to over-tempering, are the two key factors that affect their operating temperatures.

Stainless Steel 416 Characterised by excellent machinability, non-galling and non-seizing properties due to its higher sulphur content which has the effect of lowering its corrosion resistance. It is however resistant to mild corrosive atmospheres, fresh water, steam, organic materials, many mild acids and petroleum products, coupled with reasonable strength in the hardened and tempered condition. SS416 due to its excellent hardenability is capable of being through hardened up to Rc40 depending upon carbon content and section size. Small sections can be air cooled and larger sections oil quenched for maximum through hardness.Pre hardened and tempered 416 will also respond readily to nitriding achieving a typical surface hardness of over Rc65. The nitriding process however reduces the corrosion resistance and is therefore not generally recommended except for critical applications where the benefit outweighs all other considerations.

Stainless steel 416 is composed of carbon, chromium, manganese, phosphorous, silicon, and sulfur.

This grade is written as 1.4005 or X12CrS13 according to EN norm and it is written as UNS S41600 according to UNS norm. 1.4005 material is very similar to 410 grade stainless steels. The main difference is the sulfur content of this material. 416 stainless steel has a high sulfur content and this element help this grade to have a good machinability. 416 stainless can be machined very easily and this grade is also a heat threatable grade. The corrosion resistance of 416 material is not so good. But if a heat threatable grade is required and if the machinability is really important, 416 stainless steel will be a really good choice. 1.4005 grade usually used in automotive part production, machine industry and valves.
