What is EN36 Round Bar ?

EN36 (655M13) is a 3 % Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum based case hardening engineering steel which is specifically designed for carburising. The addition of nickel increases shock resistance and toughness whilst the chromium increases the material’s hardenability giving it a uniformed hardness.EN36 is a Nickel Chromium Case hardening steel which is suitable for deep hardening to develop a tough core is suitable for gears, cams rollers available in diameters only.

EN36 is a carburising steel grade with very high surface strength with a soft but strong core. The material retains a remarkable degree of toughness. With high tensile strength, EN36 is used in the production of numerous high strength parts including crankshafts in the automotive and aerospace sector.

EN36 (655M13) is used specifically in heavy duty and highly stressed applications due to its hardenability, toughness and high core strength. EN36 also offers excellent fatigue resistance.

655M13 steel is still often referred to as EN36 steel - its equivalent grade under the previous BS 970: 1955 standard.

Machinability :

EN36 offers very good machinability and weldability when supplied in the annealed condition, although when welded the material should be stress relieved after cooling. Welding is not however recommended in the heat treated or carburised condition. Machinability options including turning, milling, drilling and tapping are all suitable as long as the tool type, feeds and speeds are used in accordance with the machine manufacturer’s recommendations.
